Nicky Morgan MP has signed up to an important scheme to develop increased opportunities for youth employment for the young people of Loughborough.
The Youth Friendly MP Charter is a campaign championed by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Youth Employment, a cross party group of parliamentarians from the Houses of Commons and Lords, which is asking MPs to consider what they can do to promote employment opportunities for young people.
The Charter encourages Members of Parliament to listen to young people to understand their barriers and challenges to employment; support quality learning and development opportunities; encourage good quality youth employment; celebrate the important role young people play in our local economy; and, seek to ensure young people are treated fairly in the work that they do.
Nicky said “I am absolutely delighted to sign the Youth Friendly MP Charter as a sign of commitment to encourage youth employment opportunities.
“Youth unemployment has dropped significantly since 2011, but we now need to work to make sure no young person struggles to find their first role at all and as Members of Parliament we can play our role both collectively and individually in reducing it.
“The charter is very much about the individual steps that I can take in seeking to lower youth unemployment. I am always keen to talk with students and their teachers about the barriers they face; and to promote apprenticeships and other training opportunities to local employers.
“I’m very proud to offer work experience opportunities to local young people every week. It’s great to offer any young person the opportunity to see what it is like working in an MP’s office, and we hear that young people often find the experience really helps them when they apply for roles in the future.”
