I became the Armed Forces Champion for Charnwood Borough Council in 2014 as part of the agreement by the Council to sign the Armed Forces Covenant.
The Armed Forces Covenant is a national agreement signed by many bodies including councils, health authorities, universities and colleges, and businesses.
I was delighted to take this post. I was brought up in an army family, my father served over 30years, I married into the RAF and served for a short time in the WRAF.
As the Champion I support all our Armed Forces, both serving and veterans, together with their families. It is intended that none of them should be disadvantaged by the Council or community because of their service.
We have a dedicated Community Covenant Development Officer, Victoria Coomber, working on behalf of Charnwood, Melton and Rushcliffe Councils.
In 2017 Victoria and I set up the Veterans’ Breakfast Club, based here in Loughborough at the Toby Carvery. It is held on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 9.30a.m until 11.30a.m. Our Breakfast Club is thriving and usually between 40 and 50 come along every month. It is a great way to meet up with old friends and make new ones. Families are very welcome to come along as well.
